hey, congrats Kathy

After having her as a roommate for a year while Kate was in Seattle, I got pretty invested in Kathy's academic career, I guess. I think just getting to hear about daily travails and accomplishments and the inevitable ups and downs any PhD student goes through made me a very interested bystander.

Anyway, she prelimed on Tuesday, and passed! And she already has all her data, so I think all she has to do is write and defend, and she's outta here. She invited folks to a local Mexican place where we got her trashed on tequila drinks, most of the rest of us got nicely lubricated, and all of us pigged out on half-price appetizers.

One thing I really admire about her is that she somehow manages to gather just the right set of friends around her for things like this. There was a lot of camaraderie and joshing and laughter, and it all just felt really good.

I know what you mean. Occasions like that need the right group of people...I've had one too many with the wrong group. Glad it was a good time!

Ugh, me too. Nothing worse than a celebratory event that turns out to be not joyous or celebratory. I've found that being choosier about the people I let very close to me helps a lot there.
