old gps, new gps

I dunno, two screen shots don't do it. I was hoping to show how much more awesome my new GPS is compared to my old one (which was also pretty awesome), but static flight displays probably aren't the right way to convey that. Oh well.

The display is much crisper, and larger, and on this page at least the compass rose, bug, and data fields are overlaid on the map instead of being off to one side (that's configurable). Also, the terrain is contour-colored by elevation instead of being all one color. If I got too low, it would pop up a window with a terrain/obstacle warning as necessary. There are other pages with a lot more information on them, but I find I use this map page the most.

Anyway, I really like it.

I Am DROOLING!! You lucky bum. The GPS in the commanders doesn't even have a map page. What's more beautiful that a full color moving map and a fast groundspeed read out all on one page??

Yeah, I really don't do that early-adopter of flashy technology much; as I've written before, I'm not sure what came over me here. But it is pretty awesome. I think it's basically a GNS-430 in a handheld box. Or maybe this has parts of the G-1000 software, I'm not sure.

Funny story: A friend of mine saw the popup obstacle warning (there's a pretty tall tower close to the extended centerline of Rwy 22 at CMI--every instrument instructor points it out as an example of why not to drop below any minimum approach altitude) and looked at the tower symbol with the red X through it and said "that's pretty cool; what happens if you hit the little red X?"

I laughed and told him, "Richard, this isn't a video game! It's not just a little red X, it's a METAL TOWER STICKING UP INTO THE SKY. If I hit the little red X, the plane crashes!"
