They're going to hate me in the flying club. Since I've been the avionics officer, through no fault of mine, the planes have both been VERY expensive in terms of their avionics repairs. I'm not sure why this is.

First it was last summer's endless problems with 04H's avionics master bus and transponder. Then it was 59H's ADF, which I really wanted to just get rid of and get the club to spring for a panel GPS, but noooo, good money after bad.

Then I got a report that 04H's autopilot was not working. I took her up and sure enough, it's busted. Engaging it, I felt the servos take control of the ailerons, but they didn't do anything interesting, just kind of lolled back and forth. Twisting the roll control from side to side did nothing, slaving it to the DG bug caused it to do SOMETHING—it moved the yoke, but wasn't actually attempting to track the heading I set.

The DG itself had just been replaced, so everyone assumed it was reconnected to the autopilot incorrectly, but I wasn't so sure: that wouldn't explain the failure of the wing leveler mode.

So off she went to the avionics shop, and I got the call the other day. It's not the DG. It's not the wiring. It's not something screwy with the servos. It's the autopilot computer itself. "Big problems," the tech told me. Great. I wonder how much this is going to cost the club.
