Spring

Today is the first day where the sun is in the sky more than 50% of the day. This happens before the equinox because of refraction effects of the earth's atmosphere and, I suppose, because the sun is not a point source of light.

That and seeing Sirius so far to the west in the night sky are my first firm signs of spring and the promise that despite our miserable weather for the past couple of months, warmth and green and sunshine are coming soon.

Other signs of spring

Rain! I hope the basement isn't flooded.

This graphic shows one-hour precipitation totals from 2 to 3pm as integrated by the Lincoln IL NWS radar installation. A very wet upper air disturbance passed through here today, but must have interacted with some other feature in the atmosphere, because it kept reforming near here and by the time it all moved on, had dumped more than two inches of rain just north of here. We seem to have escaped the very worst, but it was still an awful lot of rain in a very short amount of time.
