Spam Spam and More Spam

Inbound spam volume to our campus continues to rise inexorably. What's interesting is that the volume of legitimate mail stays roughly constant or perhaps grows very slowly. It's gotten to the point that we can't even quarantine it all; anything with a score of 98%-100% just gets thrown away by default. What a fucking waste.

I wonder if you've tried applying one of the DNS blacklists?

They're nervous about that here because of the false positive rate; apparently sites wind up in those lists and it's hard to get back out, and then we can't get legitimate mail from them either.

Spiffy itself has a long, long list of firewall deny rules for huge blocks of address space outside the US. I probably should just block all inbound SMTP to that machine from off-campus; no one should be mailing me directly at that machine anyway but going through my @uiuc.edu address.
