Fun Puzzles

I did a NYT crossword today, and it was more fun than I've had in a while. Two of the long answers had clues of "First half of decoder ring" and "Second half of decoder ring"; the longest answer running right across the middle of the puzzle was then a cryptogram... took a while to get since the check letters obviously weren't working. It ended up being LFIXLEVIRHYOLDM which, after feeding it through the "decoder ring", came out OUR COVER IS BLOWN, which, of course, I had to write in the margin. Fun!!

My father was an avid crossword puzzle solver for as long as I can remember, keeping up with the newspaper ones long after much of the rest of his mind had descended into senility. But when the "modern" crossword puzzle schtick became common (with cryptograms as above, the use of symbols and punctuation in puzzles, etc.), he gave up in disgust. His mind was too rigid to accept or take any kind of joy in a puzzle that was "not fair" or "made wrong".

Been trying to rent it for a week now. Actually I went to Rentertainment tonight and they said that they have SIX copies of it, all of which have been out pretty continuously. I can't wait to see it though.

I always found crossword puzzles discouraging... I don't think I know enough things.
