Sad

I woke up this morning to loud booms from the street. It turned out to be an entourage from "Rice Tree Service" sawing down a huge old-growth tree in the city-owned strip between the sidewalk and the street. They were remarkably efficient: they blocked off the street, sawed down the tree about a six-foot chunk at a time, loaded the trunk pieces into a flatbed with a Bobcat, and then spent some time feeding everything else into a giant Vermeer chipper. There's a bit of sawdust in the street but two hours later, only a broad stump remains. I am sad, though... that tree was at least 80 years old.

I would be sad about that too. Here, they keep cutting down these great big beautiful trees they call, les flamoyants .. good reason too, because they have beautiful red and orange flowers blooming on them. They're making way for more hotels. Sad sad stories.
