I woke up this morning to loud booms from the street. It turned out to be an entourage from "Rice Tree Service" sawing down a huge old-growth tree in the city-owned strip between the sidewalk and the street. They were remarkably efficient: they blocked off the street, sawed down the tree about a six-foot chunk at a time, loaded the trunk pieces into a flatbed with a Bobcat, and then spent some time feeding everything else into a giant Vermeer chipper. There's a bit of sawdust in the street but two hours later, only a broad stump remains. I am sad, though... that tree was at least 80 years old.
