on roommates

So this evening, Kathy moved in. Somewhat Spartan-ly; bringing only a dresser and a suitcase. Presumably she'll have more stuff to bring over as she makes more trips to and from Indianapolis where she and her husband Chris live now.

It's really a perfect arrangement: she wanted a remote base here in town since she's still in school here and doesn't want to make the trip back and forth to Indy (a 2-hour drive each way). I wanted someone else around in the house to keep me from slipping too far back into "bachelor pad" mode. She's easy to get along with, and will only be here four days out of the week, so I still get time to myself which I think I will really need. She gets along well with my dog, too. And I get a little bit of rent money out of it.

Still though: it's very strange so far. I haven't had a plain old roommate (other than live-in romantic relationships and marriages) in over fifteen years, and this is going to take some getting used to. I'm far, far, FAR better boundaried than I ever have been before, so it should be relatively easy on us both, but there'll be things I have to remember and relearn, the right kinds of tact and negotiation to re-find, and a situation to become familiar with again.

But in the end, this is really a chance for me to do something right that I did so wrong in the past. For that I feel blessed.
