Happy Birthday

The ubiquitous Ethernet was invented by Bob Metcalfe and David Boggs thirty years ago this month.

Inventor celebrates 30 years of Ethernet

It's amazing, when I think about it, how that one invention, with its incredibly simple and effective way of gaining control of the medium and empirical very efficient media utilization, has remained the same (although going through many enhancements and improvements over the years, including a three-order-of-magnitude speed increase) amid all the other turmoil and rapid innovation in the computer and communication industry. Those guys really knew what they were doing. One lesson I've taken from them in my own architectures and designs is to try to keep things as simple and straightforward as possible, since they tend to make things actually more reliable than complex, sophisticated, redundant designs.
